All motorists were safe, with some truck drivers electing to stay inside their vehicles until the weather cleared.
An Emersons Transport spokesperson said one of their trucks - which was carrying potato chips - was among those stuck on SH5.
He said they had not been able to reach the driver as he was stuck in a remote location, but they weren't worried about his wellbeing.
"We've just got to sit it out. People might just have to go with their chippies this weekend."
It is understood Higgins Contracting vehicles are also among those stuck on the state highway.
Hawke's Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Manager Ian Macdonald said it was vital motorists do not drive past road closures.
Sometimes, there were hidden dropouts and downed power lines, and insurance is void past a roadblock, he said.
He urged all road users to take extra care on the roads due to the winter conditions and avoid unnecessary travel.
As well as the SH5 closure, the Napier- Taihape Road will be closed all day today and overnight from the Kaweka Forestry headquarters to the end of the road on the Rangitikei side.
The closure point at the Kaweka Forestry is manned by Fulton Hogan during daylight hours.
Pohokura Rd is closed from Lake Opouahe (Tutira) to Waitara Rd. Puketitri Rd is open but is being monitored.
Mr Macdonald said winter storms were normal this time of the year.
While Civil Defence did not have any major concerns about the overall impacts on Hawke's Bay, winds could cause damage to trees, powerlines etc and make driving hazardous.
MetService advise there is the possibility that this weather will continue into late Friday
Sea swells will rise again tomorrow, but mostly only affecting southern HB and Nukaka areas.
