Murdered New Zealander Campbell Paterson was wanted by police on drugs and violence charges in the days before his dismembered body was found in a chilly bin in rural Australia.
Queensland police found the Napier man's remains in an area of thick bushland near Cairns, in the state's Far North region on November 20 following a tip-off.
A search was conducted for Mr Paterson who had been working in the tropical city and returning to Napier every three to four months, where his wife and four children live.
He was never reported missing. However, court documents reveal police initially became concerned about Mr Paterson's whereabouts when he failed to appear on drugs and assault charges in the Cairns Magistrates Court on October 1 and again on October 15.
It was alleged Mr Paterson was caught driving by police while under the influence of methamphetamine on September 10.
