The only thing 5-year-old Sienna Malaitai wanted for Christmas this year, was to win her battle with cancer.
She got her wish.
Hawke's Bay Today first met Sienna's parents, Sharon and Vili Malaitai, in June this year. Then living in a household of 15, the hard-working couple explained how they managed to put food on the table for 10 children as part of this newspaper's Fighting Poverty campaign. The story sparked a flood of donations from the local community.
The family was also preparing to leave on a trip to Auckland so that then 4-year-old Sienna could undergo chemotherapy treatment at Starship Hospital. She had been diagnosed with stage three Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of blood cancer.
Now, a turbulent sixth months later, Sharon and Vili have revealed Sienna is cancer free. Her hair is growing back, and the family is finally taking a breath.
