A Dannevirke man says he's lucky to be alive after being hit by a car in the New World supermarket carpark.
The man, who didn't wish to be named, was hit from behind by a car being driven by an 87-year-old Woodville man, who had accelerated rather than braking. His car sped through a double bay in the carpark smashing into a trailer, pushing it at right angles before hitting the man from behind. The incident happened on Sunday.
"I'd just put my trolley away and was walking back to my car and didn't hear anything until I heard a loud bang as the car hit the trailer, the next thing I knew I was thrown off my feet, across the bonnet of the car and into the windscreen, cracking it with my head," the man said.
"The only good thing about the whole incident was feeling some of my vertebrae cracking as I went across the bonnet. They're probably back in place for the first time in a long time.
"I was lucky the car had hit the trailer first or I would have been a goner and thank goodness it wasn't a child or a woman hit as they'd have likely gone underneath the car.
