Plans are well under way for the $4.5 million redevelopment of The Salvation Army in Hastings, with services relocated while the extensive work is carried out.
Hastings Salvation Army Major David Moody said the first stage of a decade of planning to bring services at the worship and community centre under one roof will begin this month.
The family store has now moved into the old Salvation Army hall next door, and the worship centre, community ministries and offices moved off site.
A final service and lunch was held before services were relocated to 305 Heretaunga St East.
"For the first stage of building it might be about four months and then they'll move back while stage two is completed," Mr Moody said.
The whole project was expected to take a year, with hopes of being finished by Queen's Birthday weekend 2012 - the 125th anniversary of The Salvation Army operating from the Hastings site.
Mr Moody said building plans recycled some of the existing masonry.
"We are going to salvage whatever we can in terms of good, usable material like bricks and timber - it's not going to end up all in the tip," he said.
"We are keeping a couple of buildings too, but they will be remodelled and refurbished."
