Tucked away in communities throughout Hawke's Bay are a wealth of unsung heroes.
For the second time, Matariki Living Taonga Award organisers Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga are asking people to bring those behind-the-scenes battlers out of the woodwork.
Age is no boundary, nominees for the triennial event have to simply lead by example through their work and activities.
There are 10 categories, up from six at the inaugural awards, to recognise everyone from environmentalists and creatives to employers, employees, those offering a selfless service, even Whanau showing courage and strength.
An extra special returned veterans award has also been added this year to celebrate the centenary of Gallipoli Landings, and will be presented by New Zealand Governor-General Jerry Mateparae.
