A 68-year-old Scottish tourist who was killed in a car crash on Waimarama Rd, east of Hastings on Friday has been named as Richard Webster Harbinson.

Police said in a statement this morning that Mr Harbinson died as a result of injuries he suffered after the car he was driving crossed the centre line as he attempted to negotiate a bend in the road, clipped an oncoming vehicle and then spun off the road, crashing into a tree.

Mr Harbinson and his wife were in the country to visit their daughter who lives in Havelock North. His wife and daughter were also in the car and suffered serious injuries. They are currently recovering in the HB Regional Hospital.

The Eastern Serious Crash Unit are investigating.

Senior Sergeant Adamson said:"This is a tragedy for the family involved and a sad way to start the year off on Hawkes Bay roads."

The statement said: "Police would like to remind all drivers to take care as they travel around our district and to remember the basics - travel at a safe speed for the conditions, wear your seat belts, don't drink and drive, and take a break if you are feeling tired"
