I was an inmate and later a staff member at Abbotsford Children's Home in Waipawa (1940s-1950s). Although we were the recipient of much kindness from many in Hawke's Bay, I would at this time like to mention and remember the generosity of Sir James Wattie to Abbotsford. A phone call from the then matron, Miss L. E. Johnston, also known as Miss Johnnie, to Sir James was all that was needed for a gift of many cartons of Wattie's products to arrive. A treat enjoyed by us all. This gift continued many times over.
On behalf of the past Abbotsford family, I would like his family to know how grateful we were for such men as Sir James Wattie.

Fitting tribute
Mr Phillips, it was nice of you to devote your leading article to the fact that a street leading to the new shopping complex in Hastings is now named Sir James Wattie Place.
I agree, he has been a worthy and prominent businessman and been part of Hastings industry for many, many years and should be recognised.
I ask the question though; will there also be some recognition to the land the new complex is built on by calling something in the area by the name of William Nelson?

Safety concerns
Re: The new Shopping Centre at Karamu Rd.
I see that the new centre will be fine for motorists, but pedestrians, cyclists, electric scooterists - and children - are unwanted and should stay at home for their safety.
