Thirteen years after his first, Warwick Slingsby will play his 200th match for the Central premier rugby team today.
Slingsby, 33, could have reached the milestone sooner had he not spent a couple of seasons in the United Kingdom playing for the Kirkby Lonsdale club in 2004 and '05 and had the self-employed bulk spreader not restricted his availability to the second round in 2013 because of work commitments. His Northfuels Central team will host Tamatea in a second round Tui Maddison Trophy fixture at Central Park.
Although Tamatea are winless this season Slingsby, who played his age group rugby in Porangahau before going to Central Hawke's Bay College where he played at 1st XV level and then the Central club's colts, isn't anticipating "an easy win" on his big day. "Tamatea surprised us when we played them in Hastings [Central won 17-0] ... they are a bit like us and don't have a lot of depth. But they have pushed a few teams during the first half. At the same time we will aim for a win first and then the bonus point," Slingsby said.
A club committee member for the past five years and husband of former secretary-treasurer, Rebekah, Slingsby, prefers the blindside flanker role but has been happy to play hooker in recent seasons to allow promising loosies Tomo Fogarty and Jason Cutbush to strut their stuff.
"I don't mind moving up to the front row but it's better doing it on a game-by-game basis rather than switching roles during a game," Slingsby explained.
