"Now I've got a chance to make my debut the idea is to secure a permanent berth in the team," Chase said.
The Silver Fern Farms, Takapau boning room worker is equally as grateful for his employers for giving him time off to train this week.
"It's been awesome rubbing shoulders with the likes of Andrew Horrell and Robbie Fruean. I've learnt a lot this week and everyone in the team has been very welcoming," Chase said.
He is full of praise for the coaching he has received from the villagers back coaches Davis Norman and Richard Kinnear as well as the family support from parents Pita and Kelly.
"Mum and dad have been a big influence," added the former Hawke's Bay Sevens rep who had one year in the Central Ross Shield team.
The Hastings Boys' High School product who started playing as a 5-year-old at Otane has been labelled as one of the fastest players in the country by Magpies head coach Craig Philpott. He has been regularly clocked at 10.80s over 100m.
"On his day there would be nobody faster. He's got that X factor and he isn't well known to the Otago coaching staff," Philpott said.
"Shannan has had a horror run with injuries but has battled his way back and impressed during the Maddison Trophy round of the club season. He would have played in our trial at Waipukurau but we decided to give him more breathing space.
Chase's replacing of Vuicakau is the only change to the Magpies backline which started in last week's loss to Northland.
Chase's Havelock North clubmates, first five-eighth Ihaia West and No8 Gareth Evans, will both start after recovering from their hamstring and ankle injuries, respectively. Substitute prop Adrian Barone has been given until this afternoon's Captain's Run to shake off his calf strain.
Should Barone get the thumbs down, rookie Jason Long will make the 22 for the first time. Evans return sees Mark Abbott return to his regular locking role replacing Tom Parsons in the only changes to the starting pack.
Otago head coach Tony Brown will name his team today. Highlanders hooker Liam Coltman is expected to start and his tussle with Magpies vice-captain and New Zealand Maori rake Ash Dixon will be an early Highlanders trial in the wake of Dixon's decision to leave the Hurricanes and play for the Dunedin-based franchise next year.
Hawke's Bay's Highlanders winger Richard Buckman will play his 50th game for the Magpies on Sunday and Horrell will play his final match of the season before he has hip surgery in the buildup to the 2015 Super season.
Hawke's Bay and Otago have only met in five Ranfurly Shield fixtures in the 110-year history of the shield. The Magpies have won three of these fixtures and the Razorbacks two.
Evans is one of two Magpies in Sunday's team who have previously played for Otago. Substitute midfield back Jason Shoemark is the other.
There are no former Magpies in the Otago squad this season but hooker Sam Anderson-Heather is a product of Hastings Boys' High School and a former Hawke's Bay age group rep.
The Hawke's Bay under-16s will take on their Poverty Bay counterparts in the curtainraiser. Other Hawke's Bay rep fixtures this weekend will see the Saracens host their Manawatu counterparts at Park Island tomorrow; the Tuis host their Otago counterparts at Taradale tomorrow; the Bay under-19s take on Manawatu at Park Island tomorrow; the under-18s take on Poverty Bay in Wairoa tomorrow; and the under-13s take on Manawatu at Park Island tomorrow.
