Three more than handy players followed him across the Tasman. One is 25-year-old first five-eighth Kyle Beakey, who competed with Wallabies and Reds pivot Quade Cooper for Queensland rep team berths through the grades.
"Kyle will push for a Magpies berth," Green predicted.
Another is winger Reece Cleeton, who was the top try scorer in the Brisbane premier club competition.
Cleeton is a similar type of player to Magpies mid-1990s winger Tony Maidens.
"He has size, likes the physical side of the game and has a good work ethic," said Green.
Another 19-year-old Aussie, fullback Shane Parkinson, also boasts plenty of potential.
Green played 125 premier games for Clive from 1999 to 2007, including many of the record 54-game unbeaten run during the 1999, 2000 and 2001 seasons.
"Like my assistant coaches Herman [Ah Kiong] and Vaine [Maui], who will run the backs, I've bled for the team and the club. The previous two coaches [Des Allen and JJ Martin] didn't have the same involvement with the club," Green said.
An IT worker for Hygiene Technologies in Whakatu, Green wants to change "the outside perception" of the Clive premiers.
"In recent seasons, the side has been able to grind for 60 minutes but has been found wanting for the last 20. We want to become an 80-minute team. If we can achieve a top-six finish in the Nash Cup and a top-four finish in the Maddison Trophy, I will be a happy man," Green said.
"It will be good to have a 100 per cent winning record at home. But at the same time I know how tough this comp is ... you turn up asleep and any team can beat you."
Green pointed out that, with his fellow coaches, he had worked hard at changing the team's culture and attitude during the past month.
"Previously there have been a lot of good ideas but everyone has been pulling in four or five different ways."
He is keen to have the head coach role for at least four seasons and wants to be at the helm when former Magpies Karl Lowe and Sona Taumalolo return from overseas stints to finish their playing careers at the club.
Green is looking forward to the games Lowe's younger brother and exciting midfield back Jonah Lowe will play for the club this season, during school holidays.
After playing rugby in Sydney, Green took on junior coaching roles in Sydney. He coached the Noosa Dolphins under-17s, the Sunshine Coast regional under-17s and Queensland Country under-17s.
Clive are one of six teams in the competition with new head coaches this season. Steve Woods has stepped up from his assistant role with the Tech Group of Companies Napier Technical side to replace David Briggs, Anthony Morley has returned to the head coach role at MAC as a replacement for Pat Benson, Craig Gowler has replaced Hawke's Bay Insurances Napier Old Boys Marist head coach Mike Warren, former King Country Development team coach Aaron Painter will join Mika Aiolupotea as co-coaches at Tamatea as replacements for Nui Bartlett, and Andy Lord has replaced Phil Rumpler as head coach for Tanalised Napier Pirate Rugby and Sports.
Today's first-round Nash Cup encounters will see Clive host Napier Pirate Rugby and Sports at Farndon Park, Tamatea host defending champions Progressive Meats Havelock North at Bill Mathewson Park, Napier Old Boys Marist host Central at Park Island, Napier Technical host MAC at Whitmore Park, and Carters Frame and Truss Taradale host IMS Payroll Hastings Rugby and Sports at Carters Arms Park.
