Rubbish fire gets into tree plantation in Norsewood

The fire ban has been lifted in some areas, but residents are being warned to take care when lighting fires.

The ban had been lifted in Norsewood on Friday but a rubbish fire on Sunday got into vegetation and fire crews and appliances were called to Ngamoko Rd late that afternoon to put it out.

"The fire had jumped into trees and burned down a shed," Norsewood fire chief Terence Ahern said.

Neighbour Lyn McConchie said the first sign of trouble was when the flames shot upwards.

"The flames were about six feet to seven feet [1.80m-2.10m] high but they were rolling along a distance of some 25 feet [7.6m]," she said.

Appliances and crews from Norsewood and Dannevirke used portable water dams to supply water, and tankers ferried water.

They also called on a local fire chief and wood contractor to chop down trees, Ahern said.

The fire was on the same site where a home and shed were engulfed in fire in June last year.

And although Ahern was grateful a strong wind wasn't blowing late Sunday, the "spot fire" jumped from the trees and into another paddock.

"But we just kept an eye on it and let it burn out by itself," he said.

Norsewood's deputy fire chief Wayne Montgomery brought in his digger to help control the fire and although the area was "still quite hot" when the crews left the scene, Ahern said the owner was keeping an eye on it and Fire Comms had been alerted in case of re-ignition.
