Work is under way at seven bridge sites across Hawke's Bay as part of a New Zealand Transport Agency driven programme of structural improvements and safety upgrades.
An agency spokesman said the programme was expected to be carried out over the next few months and motorists could expect some slight delays at some sites.
To minimise disruption to traffic the bridge maintenance crews would be carrying out much of the work at night or over the weekends, and while most of the work would be going on under the bridges, and out of sight, motorists needed to stick to the temporary speed limits and traffic management systems which would be in place.
At least five of the seven work sites had the potential to affect motorists' journeys as temporary speed restrictions and some stop-go signalling had been put in place.
Minor repairs as well as washing and painting is being carried out on the Karamu Bridge near Hastings while bridge joint work was taking place at the Mangatewai Bridge on SH2 south.
