A batch of wet weather is on its way to the Bay.

Today will see showers becoming widespread with a chance of some late thunderstorms.

MetService meteorologist Nicole Ranger said a storm warning was in place for the region but has since been downgraded to a watch.

"There is still a possibility areas in northern Hawke's Bay will get some heavy thunderstorms late this evening."

Thursday will again bring rain, some heavy, with a possibility of thunder.

The high for Thursday will be a brisk 16C as a southerly change will bring cooler conditions in the region.

"It is a slow moving system, driven by a cold air aloft that is dropping temperatures," Ms Ranger said.

"Southerly winds will also be present but nothing too dramatic." The rain will ease on Friday and should subside for the weekend.
