Two Hawke's Bay primary pupils have been kicked out after bringing cannabis to school last week.
The two students ran foul of the "zero tolerance" drugs policy at Peterhead School in Flaxmere.
Being under 16 years old they were "excluded" rather than being expelled and now attend another school.
Principal Martin Genet said the pupils brought a small amount of cannabis to school, not to smoke or deal, but rather to show off.
"They made a mistake and that was the consequence," he said. Children know the policy regarding drugs, and the school worked with the community constable in these cases, Mr Genet said.
Peterhead School received a glowing report from the Education Review Office in February and Mr Genet said people were happy both the school and children were safe.
Constable Sue Robinson, of the Flaxmere Police youth aid section, said she would be talking to the children and their families.
"They're so young (but) that's the time to get them," she said.
These children were at the "experimenting age" and it was important to deal with them before they get addicted.
"We like to intervene early - then we have a better chance."
