One of the objects of the trust is the promotion of training and education in farming.
Since its inception, the ADB Williams Trust has granted many scholarships/bursaries to students studying at tertiary level and has contributed to the agricultural and local community.
Pukemiro has previously worked with other agricultural training providers but is now excited to be offering its very own on-farm two-year cadetship to three motivated young people each year.
Jed Murphy, operations manager, said: "Life as a cadet at Pukemiro Station is hands-on, focused both on the farm and in the classroom, with cadets living on-site in their own cottage throughout the duration of the programme.
"Cadets receive a range of on-farm training including stockmanship, fencing, shearing, animal husbandry, pasture and crop management, farm maintenance and technology.
"They learn valuable domestic skills as well as budgeting, time management and goal setting."
Pukemiro cadets have their own theory tutor, Anna Murphy, who is a qualified teacher and delivers theory training in a classroom on-farm one day per week.
Cadets are enrolled through EIT and in their first year study toward NZ Certificates in Agriculture Level 3 which covers vehicles, machinery, infrastructure and farming systems.
In their second year, cadets will complete their NZ Certificate in Agriculture Level 4, breeding livestock.
Pukemiro Station will take on three more cadets for 2019 while the three current cadets transition into the second year of their cadetship.
The trust is looking for Year 12-13 students who are motivated, hard-working and who want to develop their skills and gain the qualifications they need to have a successful career in the sheep and beef industry.
The Pukemiro Cadetship open days in June 9 and 10 allow students and their families to view the property and facilities. Each open day starts at 9.30am at the station woolshed, Otope Rd, Dannevirke.
Attendees will have an opportunity to meet and mingle with staff and the current cadets.
A short presentation will be made and then people will be given an opportunity to view the station's facilities.
