The painted power box next to a Tamatea paddock now has an eerie hue for Ian McEwan and Bruce Kent.

The pair woke on Friday to discover that several sheep in the paddock had died of their injuries after being attacked and mauled by three dogs.

Kent who tends to the sheep on Wharerangi Rd said more than 20 sheep had been wounded by what they believed were three different dogs - four sheep had died and many others were badly injured.

"They've done a hell of a lot of damage," he said.

McEwan, who owns the sheep, says he's angry about the harm these dogs have caused.

"Some of them are badly ripped apart; they've had their throats ripped and back legs ripped - and they're all in-lamb ewes which is pretty disappointing to say the least," he said.

All three dogs had been caught and were with Napier City Council's Animal Control.

McEwan said they were excellent on the job, catching the dogs so they couldn't come back and cause further damage.

Kent described it as mass sheep mauling.

"It's very upsetting, these ewes are valued at over $200, it's a lot of money and to see the suffering and the damage to the sheep that are still alive is awful," Kent added.

A vet was tending to the sheep needing immediate care.
