In Hawke's Bay the sport steadily gained in popularity with more people learning about it and giving it a go, she said.
"It's something a bit different that attracts people.
"We just want to offer the sport to anyone out there that's interested."
People can have played sports all their lives or never before and be good at roller derby, she said.
It also appeals to those who used to skate as a child and by the end of the beginner course everyone would fit and strong.
Bay City Rollers has two teams, a development team, Twisted Sisters, and regional representatives, Iron Maidens.
A couple of years ago they also started a junior division catering for boys and girls aged 7-18.
Ms Porter said she hoped to continue to develop and expand the league over time.
"We really want to grow the league more.
"There's not a huge skating culture in Hawke's Bay and we want to continue to develop that."
The club has also started offering casual skating sessions in summer for people wanting to go for a skate.
The beginner courses, which are run in February and July, go for 20 weeks with an initial six-week period where people learn basic safety and skating skills as well as how the game works.
Skates, safety pads and helmets are included in the course fee and participants will be trained by Bay City Roller's coaches.
The league is also looking for referees, both men and women, with no experience required.
This weekend's Freshmeat Course will be held at Meeanee Hall, Napier, tomorrow from 2pm-3pm.
