Hawke's Bay police are warning computer users to ignore phone calls from people claiming to offer technical support.
Hasting residents had been targeted by so-called Windows Operating Systems technicians trying to gain access to online banking details and other personal information, Senior Sergeant Stuart Fleming said.
``These persons are telephoning residents and claiming that their computer has an error and the caller needs to access it online to fix the problem,'' he said.
Mr Fleming said anyone who had received such a call should not follow the instructions and if they had allowed remote access to their computer they should disconnect from the internet and seek professional advice.
The warning follows a series of similar computer-related scams around the country.
