Police at the crash scene on St Georges Rd North yesterday.

Police are looking for a cyclist who stopped at a crash site yesterday where a man was hit by a passing truck.

Police say they believe the cyclist stopped briefly and helped with first aid when a pedestrian was hit by a truck on St Georges Rd North in Hastings yesterday about 7.45am. The pedestrian, in his 70s, remains in Hawke's Bay Hospital in critical condition.

The crash is currently under investigation, but Constable Brendon Ferrier said police were keen to speak to the cyclist, who may have witnessed the incident.

"This person stopped and helped the injured man for a short time, but left the scene by the time police arrived. We would like to speak to him as he may have some important information that may help our investigation," Mr Ferrier said.

There is no description of the man or any other details about the bike he was riding.
