Police are looking for the people responsible for shooting a Hastings youth with an air rifle at the weekend.

Police say the victim and his brother-in-law were walking along Kiwi St in Camberley on Sunday about 6pm when an unknown vehicle drove past them with the occupants pulling gang signs and yelling abuse.

The brother-in-law yelled abuse back and the vehicle did a u-turn and drove slowly past the pair. One of the car occupants pointed an air rifle out one of the car windows and shot the 15-year-old youth in the lower back.

The victim spent the night in hospital and a decision on surgery is still being made.

Constable Rhyan Honeyfield said the victims could only provide a basic description of the vehicle. It is described as a four-door sedan either black or dark green with a spoiler on the back. It possibly had red or orange stripes on the bonnet and boot.

"It was described as being a V8 as it sounded like a big car and had thick spoked mag wheels. Unfortunately there is no description of the car occupants," Mr Honeyfield said.

Police want to speak with anyone who witnessed the shooting or who may have seen the car in the Kiwi St area on Sunday evening.

Anyone with information should contact Mr Honeyfield at HB Police on 06 2113779 or information can be left anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
