Sophie Profitt, who works nearby, said she didn't see or hear anything in what is usually a quiet and safe area. "I haven't heard of anything happening like that before."
A Shakespeare Rd resident, who did not want to be named, said there was a school on the road. That was concerning as the incident happened when there could have been children around.
However, he hoped it was a one-off incident.
"There's always going to be some idiot," he said. "I wouldn't have thought it was a big problem here but it's not nice for it to happen. Of course one doesn't want something like that happening in our community."
Another resident said she felt very concerned to hear about the attack and she hoped that the offender would be caught soon.
She had been living on Shakespeare Rd for about 12 years and had only ever heard of one other incident which was a dairy owner who was attacked with a knife a while ago, she said.
"It's a concern that this is happening. I hope it stays a safe area."
The event was a shock for another resident who said they did not like the thought of an assault like this happening in their safe neighbourhood.
Nearly a month ago a jogger was indecently assaulted by a Caucasian male in his 30s on O'Dowd Rd, Taradale, leaving other runners fearing for their safety.
An offender ran up behind the female victim, indecently assaulted her and ran back to his vehicle about 6am to 6.30am on Friday, September 29.
Other local residents and runners said they were very concerned about the attack and had changed their running plans and made sure they did not run alone.
A few days before, an 83-year-old man was arrested in relation to another indecent assault in Taradale, on September 24.
This incident involved a woman who was walking on Avondale Rd at 5.45pm and was approached by a man who offered her fruit, hugged her and assaulted her before walking off.
In February a woman was indecently assaulted by a Caucasian man in his 20s while walking on the York Ave side of Anderson Park, in Tamatea, Napier.
