Passengers in the car which veered off State Highway 2and ended up in a dam early on Sunday morning had a lucky escape.
The car was travelling along the state highway near Te Aute before coming off the road, going through a fence and falling in to a dam in a paddock at the bottom of Te Aute Hill.
While one man remained in a serious but stable condition in the high dependency unit and one woman remained in a stable condition at Hawke's Bay Hospital, two other passengers were discharged with minor injuries.
Otane Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer John Oliver said it could have been a lot worse than what it was.
By the time the crew arrived at the scene the four passengers were already out of the car and in the ambulance.
