A Farndon Rd Resident said the crash was "pretty bad", and on the Hastings side of the railway bridge.
Police had closed both ends of the road, but were letting residents through.
"My wife came through to bring the kids home, and she said, 'gosh, I didn't want to bring the kids through that'."
Farndon Rd is closed from Pakowhai Rd to State Highway 2 while emergency services continue attending the scene.
A resident who has lived on the road for more than 20 years said their road has had more than its fair share of bad accidents.
"The Last four or five years have been terrible, we almost need speed humps or something."
This is the second fatal crash on Farndon Rd in the last two years with Jesse Uncles, 21, dying at the scene back in August 2015.
The car driven by Tyler Walker who was four times the legal alcohol limit rolled on a bend and dropped down to a stand of trees and flipped back on to the road.
Mr Uncles who was in the back seat died at the scene while two other passengers were injured.
Mr Walker was sentenced to three years and nine months' imprisonment in April last year admitting one charge of drink driving causing death, two charges of drink driving causing injury and one of dangerous driving.
He was also disqualified from driving for seven years.
