A person suffered serious burn injuries after a "suspicious" car fire that witnesses said sounded like an explosion in Napier this morning.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said they received calls about 1.30am about the fire, which was threatening a property, on Lister Crescent in the suburb of Maraenui.

Two fire crews attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

The fire was being treated as suspicious and a fire investigator would be arriving at the scene this morning, the spokesman said.

A St John's Ambulance spokeswoman said they transported one patient in a serious condition to Hawke's Bay Hospital.
