King also finished second that day in the Corwen Open, which Fagan had won 15 times in his career, and the two were beaten in a test, allowing Wales to tie their series 2-all.
As it happens, Fagan is now not retiring until this weekend.
Son Jack, who last week won the Royal Welsh Open, talked him into travelling with him to a competition in France.
Referendum cranks-up
Beef + Lamb NZ will hold seven meetings in the wider Hawke's Bay region as part of its regional roadshow ahead of the sheep and beef levy referendum, to be held in November.
The vote is held every six years and details of what Beef + Lamb NZ is planning for the next levy cycle are being mailed to farmers.
Beef + Lamb NZ chairman James Parsons says: "As a quick heads up, there will be no change to levy rates."
They will keep market development in the levy order at $5.5 million for 2015-16, and review and discuss with farmers what the collective role should be later in the year.
A constitutional review would also be held at the next annual meeting next March.
By law, a "yes" vote enables Beef + Lamb NZ to continue its work on behalf of farmers.
A "no" vote would mean that B+LNZ would be wound down and all the programmes carried out on behalf of farmers would end. Voting is open to all sheep, beef and dairy farmers, as long as they were registered on the B+LNZ electoral roll and owned livestock on June 30.
About 24 million head of sheepmeat and 2.4 million head of adult are currently being killed each year, with 60 cents per sheep and $4.40 per head of cattle going toward levies, from about 12,000 commercial sheep and beef farmers and 11,000 commercial dairy farmers.
The schedule for meetings in the wider Hawke's Bay region is: August 21, 3.30pm, Oruawharo (includes farmer council annual meeting); August 25, 2.30pm, Pongaroa Hall; August 25, 5.30pm, The Vault cafe, Dannevirke; August 27, 9.30am, Raukura Station, Tiniroto; August 28, 10am, Frasertown Tavern; August 28, 1pm, McMillan's Woolshed, Tutira; August 28, 3.30pm, Havelock North Community Centre.
Pipfruit conference
More than 200 people are expected to attend the pipfruit industry annual conference in Wellington on August 5-6, followed by a Wairarapa field trip.
There will be a mix of New Zealand and international speakers covering topics relevant to domestic and export programmes, and which support the industry strategy's $1 billion annual export target by 2022.
The keynote speaker will be Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi, who will speak on the importance of the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme for Samoa.
