The Hawke's Bay Sport Fishing Club hopes a new competition starting this week will help anglers overcome the blues they have been feeling since its long-running Coruba tournament ended two years ago.
Competition organiser Joe Bicknell says fishing crews are missing the big three-day event, which was one of the best known in New Zealand's sport fishing calendar, and he hopes interest in the new competition over the next two weekends will bring back some of the prestige of the former event.
Registration for the new event starts tonight at the club, near the entrance to the inner harbour in Napier, with the main target the $2000 on offer for the biggest marlin or tuna.
"If we get enough boats, some good fish will be caught," Mr Bicknell said.
"We want to build it up to the stage that the Coruba was, if we can find a major sponsor."
