The mystery is solved: a horticultural company has taken the blame for the mess that fell on to Tutira Store.
Store owner Jill Dornan suspected an aircraft was to blame for the strange substance that splattered across the building on Tuesday.
But yesterday a staffer from Evergreen Landcare fronted up at the store with flowers and the promise of a clean-up.
"That's all I wanted," Ms Dornan said. "Someone to put their hand up and say I did it and clean it up."
The company's truck was travelling towards the Matahorua Gorge, where it was fertilising hillsides.
Company boss Hamish Cunningham said a driver emailed him a copy of theHawke's Bay Today story and he knew it was from their truck.
"I thought I'd better go see them and say it's not poo," he said, adding that an air switch system had clicked on when it should not have.
