Ms Annan said neighbours alerted authorities who attended the fire at around 6.54pm on Sunday evening.
Mark McGill from NZ Fire Service's Napier station confirmed this, saying while the service was unaware at this stage as to the cause of the blaze, it started in the kitchen and three fire appliances - including one from Hastings - attended the incident.
He said they were on the scene for about one hour and 40 minutes.
Ms Annan was not sure what started the fire in the house that they rent on Merton Cr in Pirimai.
"We just came home and our whole entire house was in flames," she said.
Yesterday family and friends turned out in a force of support to salvage what they could for the young couple who will become parents in less than five weeks.
"We lost the bassinet and all that kind of stuff," Ms Annan said.
"Luckily the cot was still standing but we lost all our baby clothes.
"I lost all my clothes but, hey, they're replaceable."
In a Facebook post a Tanya Puketapu, writing as Ms Annan's stepmother, said the house was "completely gutted".
"We have some very sad news," Ms Puketapu posted.
"Our daughter (my stepdaughter) and son-in-law lost their house to fire last night, it is completely gutted."
Ms Puketapu said they spent yesterday saving what they could from the burnt-out shell of a unit.
She said that the car seats and cot made it and some of their draws but lost "just about all of their baby clothes, nappies, toys", as they were set up for a baby girl to arrive before this.
She went on to ask if anyone had any surplus baby girl clothes newborn to six months that "could lessen the stress".
"Please, no questions as to how this happened it just did and we are on a mission to put their minds at ease. Thanks in advance x [sic]."
The young couple, are currently house hopping between Ms Annan's father and her grandmother while they work out how to move forward.
"We are house hopping between the both of them until we can afford to find another flat," she said.
