The Rua Roa Women's Institute has a growing membership, but they want to appeal to a broader base by encouraging new, younger members.
Last Friday a new initiative by the institute was the Mother's Day morning tea, with new mums urged to attend.
And despite a cold, wet, miserable morning, young mother Julia Brightwell and her two children, 8-month-old Zara and Jesse, 2 and a half, braved the rain to join institute members and others in the Dannevirke Bowling Clubrooms.
With members of the Horoeka/Ti Tree Point WI along to support the event, it was a chance for a good old-fashioned natter over a cuppa and a scone, with the click of knitting needles and the whirr of spinning wheels in the background.
The older folk reminisced on their days as young married mums bringing up their children, with one visitor recalling a move from London to the Australian outback and others their days of coping with no electricity or running water.
