Canteen had also helped by going into the school and explaining the effects of Lochie's condition to teachers.
The Year 12 student has had a number of operations, including one removing his pituitary gland, which means he needs to be on medication.
Although the tumour was first removed when he was 5, by the time he turned 10 it had grown back, meaning he needed further operations.
Lochie would get "extremely exhausted", his mother said, although he appeared healthy.
He was also more prone to minor illnesses than most teens.
The 16-year-old was well enough to do the Half Mega, however, which he has been training for at school.
"To get him this far is pretty good," Mrs Wakely said.
She was not daunted by the prospect of a 15km walk, as she already did long walks on a regular basis.
"I go out and do about 10km twice a week."
Mrs Wakely said she was considering dressing up in costume for the event, which she did last year, wearing a Batman costume for the walk.
She said she was yet to discuss this year's costume choices with Lochie, whose three sisters have also participated in the Mega Walk in previous years.
This year, Lochie's younger sister Emily - a sibling member of Canteen -would be helping out at the finish line.
One of the things Mrs Wakely said she was most looking forward to about the walk was the chance to spend one-on-one time with Lochie and have a good chat.
The 15km Half Mega would begin at Awatoto at 9am and finish at Mitre 10 Napier. It would take around two and a half hours to complete.
