It's going to be a weekend of two halves according to the Metservice.
Hawke's Bay residents have been making the most of the sunny weather during the week, with overnight temperatures not nearly as frosty as previous weeks.
While western areas of the country will be struck with icy temperatures, rain and gale force winds, Hawke's Bay will get off relatively lightly.
The wettest weather is expected for the West Coast, and rain is set to spread to the North Island for Sunday.
MetService meteorologist John Law said for the North Island the weekend would begin with drier conditions beneath a short-lived ridge of higher pressure.
