Iain Maxwell will be taking the role of group manager resource management at Hawke's Bay Regional Council early in November.
Mr Maxwell is well-known in Hawke's Bay through his time as regional manager of Hawke's Bay Fish and Game and in his current capacity as senior freshwater ecologist at the Cawthron Institute. He will take over from Darryl Lew, who left recently to take up a role as director of the environment in Abu Dhabi.
The regional council's chief executive Andrew Newman said Mr Maxwell brings a wealth of knowledge to the technical and planning role of the council, and a strong understanding of the rivers and environment in the region. "I have been very impressed with Iain's understanding of the challenges the council and the region face, and his proven ability to work constructively with many parties to generate solutions," Mr Newman said.
"Iain will be a very good fit for this organisation." Mr Maxwell is still completing work with the Cawthron Institute, where he is part of a team researching the effect of human activities on coastal and freshwater resources. This includes providing technical support to the new Environment Protection Agency and investigation work for regional councils, private companies, iwi organisations and the Ministry of Science and Innovation. He will join the Hawke's Bay Regional Council on November 7.
