Man flown to Wellington Hospital after truck rolls

A truck driver, in his 60s, has been transferred to Wellington Hospital from Hawke's Bay, after his truck rolled yesterday afternoon.

The driver was transported to Hawke's Bay Hospital by helicopter in critical condition, after the accident near the intersection of Kereru Rd and Big Hill Rd, Hastings.

He has since been transported to the Wellington Hospital for further treatment.

A Wellington Hospital spokesperson said he was in serious condition in the ICU.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 1.45pm on Wednesday.

Police say it was a one-vehicle crash and that a single occupant was being treated for critical injuries.

Danny Angland and Andrew Bruce were the first at the scene and said that it wasn't a good sight at all.

"We heard it happen and rushed down there and saw he was trapped and so we grabbed some crowbars and smashed out the cab because every where else was smashed in," Angland said.

"He was completely unconscious the entire time and we just worked to make him comfortable and make sure he was breathing clearly, we even had to get a hacksaw and cut out the steering wheel to release some of the pressure on him because he was pinned in there."

He said that once ambulance arrived they step away but did all they could to help out.

"He wasn't in a good way really, but he was taken into good care and being well looked after."
