The scene of an alleged home invasion in Napier at the weekend.

A 23-year-old man has been charged with two offences in relation to an alleged home invasion which occurred at a Napier address at the weekend.

Police say that the man who has been charged has head injuries and remains in hospital in a critical condition. The injuries are alleged to have been inflicted when the man confronted the home owner, who had been asleep in his bed.

The alleged intruder has been charged with assaulting a person with a blunt instrument and committing burglary with a weapon.

He drove himself to nearby City Medical after the alleged incident and was then transferred to Hawke's Bay Hospital with head injuries.

In an unrelated assault, a 37 year old man who was allegedly attacked at his home address on the same day is in hospital in a stable condition.

Police said in a statement that a scene examination of the address was continuing and was expected to be completed today.

"Enquiries are on-going, and the men in both cases have yet to be formally interviewed due to their injuries.

"No further updates can be given at this time," the statement said.
