One local lady has put her passion for sewing to good use helping to keep those on the streets warmer this winter.
Charla Hawaikirangi, from Taradale, is turning blankets of all shapes, colours and sizes into ponchos and gifting them to those in need.
"I want to make a difference and when I saw my aunty wearing one a couple of weeks ago I thought hey, that would be perfect to create, and they don't take long either."
Ms Hawaikirangi works during the day but after finishing "mummy duties" in the evening she takes herself away to make these winter warmers.
Her passion for sewing started when she was in intermediate where she used to create bandanna duvet covers for friends and family.
