"This is only the second year that we've run this one but we've made it a little bit shorter to encourage more families so it is an easy ride, not very far."
Bay Espresso owner Chris Jarvis, who sponsors the event among others, said it is a "great way to show off other parts of Hawke's Bay".
Meanwhile, with enthusiasm growing around the carnival, motorists and cyclists are being urged to show mutual respect when sharing the road.
"The challenge is always going to be to get both parties to be courteous to each other," Mr Murphy said.
"That's been a challenge over history, and is still evolving, and hopefully with events like this more focused on people cycling from all walks of life, then motorists will be a little more patient in the future. You would like to think that would be the case."
The comments come after a Puketapu Rd resident Dwayne Ewart complained to Hawke's Bay Today about the actions of a cyclist during Friday's BDO Elite and Under23 time-trial event.
Although further frustrations over a series of road closures during the first weekend of the carnival were expressed by some motorists on social media sites, Mr Murphy expressed gratitude to the majority of motorists who had remained patient.
"We're totally reliant on people understanding that it is a big traffic management plan that we are trying to deliver.
"We've got the top of New Zealand's elite riders out there on the course, and we've got professional riders who are based in Europe here, so this is probably the strongest field we have had in the three years we've been running it.
"This is the serious side of the carnival. After this we jump into the more recreational cycling activities. So on the Tuesday and Wednesday it sort of jumps into different tone. Then, on the Wednesday night we have the club-based criterium event after our family fun ride."
Many of the recreational events would be free to participate in, with people able to either pre-register or register on the day.
"We're hoping we will get the numbers to support it and we're looking forward to some fantastic events."
