Havelock North Intermediate yesterday reminded everyone of a moment 20 years ago when a great New Zealander pulled on a pair of red socks and took on the most powerful team in the world, to win The America's Cup.
Now those socks have become a tribute to sailor Sir Peter Blake and a symbol of what we love most about being Kiwis. No matter what the odds or the competition we face, if we set our sights on a goal, we can achieve it.
Every year, thousands of Kiwis proudly celebrate Red Socks Day.
To mark yesterday's anniversary, a limited-edition anniversary pair of red socks was produced.
