A judge yesterday turned down an application for bail for a man who has admitted dealing methamphetamine in Hastings last year.
The application was made on behalf of 31-year-old Paora Berhane Sellasi Gemmell, of Gisborne, after he pleaded guilty in Napier District Court to charges of supplying methamphetamine and offering to supply methamphetamine between August 22 and October 14 last year.
Co-accused Jacqueline Noralee Garnham, 28, also of Gisborne, was discharged after the Crown decided not to proceed with the case against her.
An application for continued bail for Gemmell was made by defence counsel Leo Lafferty, who said Gemmell accepted imprisonment as the likely outcome, and had co-operated with conditions of bail while awaiting the appearance, but had some matters to attend to before being sentenced.
Judge Geoff Rea said that with the likelihood of anything other than a lengthy jail sentence "non-existent", the application was declined.
