Despite wet weather set to disperse over the region in the coming days, the sweltering humidity is here to stay.
MetService meteorologist Brian Mercer said it was due to a strong northeasterly flow that is bringing warm air from the tropics.
"It is giving this relatively warm air, but it is also quite moist and what that means is even though the temperatures aren't super hot, because there's a lot of moisture in the air, the actual human body feels this high humidity feels much more uncomfortable."
An example he gave was that a 28C day in very dry conditions feels more pleasant than a 24C day in moist and humid conditions.
"We're going to be in this humid air mass really up until at least Saturday and probably further on until next week as well," Mr Mercer said.
