There's no set recipe for a cohesive front of house team - but Hawke's Bay restaurants have it down to a fine art.

Four of the best have been recognised for their dedication and commitment to making diners feel welcome and relaxed when eating out.

Sarah Watson, owner and general manager of Deliciosa Tapas and Wine, had nothing but praise for her team who were a vital cog in the running of a successful business.

"Staff need to be attentive, intuitive and communicate well both with customers and the rest of the team to ensure speedy service and a smooth night," she said. "It is a challenge to go to each new table, build a rapport with the customers and ensure they have a great experience each time."

She described restaurant manager Kim Davis as calm, competent and a natural leader.

Banding together to help one another and provide seamless service was Emporium's secret.

"Staff always help each other and have really strong, friendly personalities," food and beverage manager Shaye Bird said. "We create a fun environment - if the staff are having a good time, the guests will have a good time."

The team were all experienced professionals.

At Pacifica, a willingness to do more than required meant everything to manager and maitre d Natalie Bulman.

"It's about consideration of others, both customers and other members of staff. We have each other's back. If you can see someone's struggling, you step in. A lot of people say that our service is friendly but not too intrusive - that's what it should be."

A huge emphasis was placed on service at Mister D, where a helpful team and welcoming environment were paramount.

Open from breakfast through to dinner, the team were always adaptable and friendly.
