A horse has been put down after being hit by a vehicle in the seaside town of Haumoana, Hawke's Bay, yesterday morning.
Police were called to Haumoana St at about 6.30am after a white Toyota Hilux hit the horse, which had escaped from a nearby paddock.
The Toyota Hilux, which had its lights on at the time, was written off after it was left with a buckled bonnet and roof, and a smashed windscreen.
Police, ambulance and the fire service attended the crash.
A fire service spokesman said the driver did not need an ambulance.
