The big one got away but the Black Sticks picked up kudos in the department of individual performances at the end of the HB Cup tourney in Hastings last night.
New Zealand defender Samantha Charlton picked up 26 points, ahead of American Lauren Crandall (21pts), to claim the inaugural Robyn Mactaggart Medal which recognises the best and fairest player during the 24-match tourney.
Three independent judges awarded three, two and one points to players who didn't receive more than two yellow cards or a red one over that duration.
Japan's Mayumi Ono was third with 18 points, Yang Peng (China 17) while Argentine Carla Rebeechi and Australians Jodie Kenny and Madonna Blyth were equal on 15 but Blythe picked up two yellows to be deemed ineligible.
"The Black Sticks really appreciate the support that has come from Hawke's Bay during the past few years and I am a little overwhelmed that I have been honoured with the inaugural Robyn Mactaggart medal," Charlton said in receiving the ward which has been named in honour of Robyn Mactaggart who was involved with the code as a player, coach, parent and fan. She died in November 2012 after a prolonged illness at the age of 44.
