One of Hastings' most prominent artworks is about to get a thorough going-over.
The Nikau Vessel, a three metre high work by Auckland sculptor Virginia King, will undergo maintenance and cleaning from next week.
It will be removed from its site for the sprucing up.
Among other things, its 'legs' will be tested for strength and its plumbing for any age-related damage. Once any repairs are made and it is thoroughly cleaned it will be reinstated.
From Monday, safety fences will surround the work as initial inspections are undertaken, with the removal expected to occur later in the week.
