Beginning his career in Scotland in 1994, he moved to New Zealand in 2003. Since then he's taught at various schools in Auckland, gaining extensive classroom teaching and managerial experience - most recently as assistant headmaster of the Junior College at Pinehurst School.
Add to that a post graduate diploma in education leadership from Auckland University and he was a standout.
It had been a big upheaval moving wife Vicki and three children from Auckland to Havelock North a month ago, but already they were enjoying the change of scenery.
Havelock North locals made them feel welcome and he described the village as a "phenomenal place to live".
"I came from Scotland 13 years ago and spent virtually all that time in Auckland, I taught at state schools, integrated schools and private schools," Mr Fiet said.
"I have got three children, my wife and my family support is paramount, I have one son and two daughters and I would have no qualms about sending my son to this school."
It was exciting to be part of the Hereworth family, surrounded by iconic buildings and grounds which have become synonymous with quality education for young men.
"It just grabs your breath a bit, there's a grandeur to the place it's about being in awe of what the school stands for."
He hoped to make a positive impact as ninth principal. One of the first steps was attracting students at a younger level - with intake starting from age five running through to 13.
"The school environment is designed for boys - the curriculum, lessons, the sport ... it has great support in the community."
One of his strengths was understanding how students adapt to technology, and its use within a classroom.
Mr Fiet replaces Ross Scrymgeour, who resigned this year after 13 years as headmaster.
