Deputy mayor Sandra Hazlehurst says she is looking forward to the extra roles and responsibilities of being acting mayor.
Hastings deputy mayor Sandra Hazlehurst says she would prefer not to be paid a mayoral salary while she acts for Lawrence Yule, but the matter is still to be discussed by the council.
Last week Mr Yule, who is the National Party candidate for Tukituki, said he would stand down as mayor on June 23 and take unpaid leave of absence until he resigns on August 28.
Following discussions with the full council, councillor Adrienne Pierce, who was last month selected as the National candidate for Palmerston North, would also take unpaid leave of absence from June 23 and resign on the same date.
Mr Yule said the savings for the five months the pair were unpaid would amount to about $72,000 that could be re-allocated to the costs of holding a byelection.
