Two Hawke's Bay construction companies have made the Top 100 NZ Homes of the year, a reflection of the talented tradies in Hawke's Bay, says the region's Master Builders president.
The East Coast/Manawatu & Whanganui regional House of the Year competition winners have been announced with three companies winning awards, two of which made the Top 100 NZ Homes.
There were seven Hawke's Bay homes competing in the regional awards.
Ainsworth & Collinson won the CARTERS New Home $1 million-$1.5 million category and the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award for a home in Napier.
Director Flint Collinson said the team was "really happy with the win".
"We pride ourselves on building to a very high standard and to be awarded Gold is recognition of this."
The house was designed by architect Nick Bevin for a busy, professional young couple with a family, he said.
"The features of the home, as well as its outlook and proximity to the Pacific Ocean, are the exterior structural elements of concrete block and New Zealand Redwood cladding which both continue into the interior and the almost three-dimensional polished concrete floors."
He said the home has "a real cosiness to it" with the warm timbers and open fire, aided by in-slab heating.
The bathroom win was "the icing on the cake," Collinson said.
"To be awarded the Lifestyle Bathroom Award was extra exciting for the client as he is involved in the plumbing industry and they personally chose the fixtures and fittings."
Judges commented that the whole bathroom, fitted with a custom-made vanity cabinet complete with stone top and recessed basin, "created a uniquely special atmosphere".
Hawke's Bay Construction Company won the Supreme Renovation Award, the Renovation Award $500,000-$1 million category and the Kitchen Excellence Award for a Napier home.
For the Supreme Renovation Award judges commented that the "well-considered reconfiguration of spaces makes this house fit for modern living".
There had been a complex structural upgrade and layout redesign and original features have been both maintained and replicated.
"Seamless integration of the renovations makes it near impossible to see what was altered and what was original. The workmanship is outstanding and a worthy Supreme Award recipient."
Hawke's Bay Construction Company has also been announced in the Top 100 NZ Homes for House of the Year and will be eligible to win an award at the national competition on December 11.
Director Richard Bousfield said as a young company only two years old, the opportunity to renovate the heritage home "was a real honour".
He said there were a lot of challenges working on a house that had been renovated multiple times, such as propping the second storey and remove load-bearing walls to allow for new structural steel installation
"We are extremely excited about being a part of the national competition and making the top 100.
"It's testament to the team and how much pride they took in their work while undertaking this renovation."
Welch Builders & Construction and Ehaus Hawke's Bay won the GIB Show Home Award, Craftsmanship Award and APL Sustainable Excellence Award, for a home in Havelock North and have also made the top 100 list.
Hawke's Bay Master Builders president Chris Flude said all the local winners should be "incredibly proud" of the "hard work" which went into the builds.
"To make the top 100 requires craftsmanship and collaboration from everyone involved in the project.
"These homes are very different; one being a modern, certified passive house and the other a renovation and restoration of an 1860's category 2 heritage house.
"But both come with their own complexities so to make it to the national competition is an outstanding achievement."
He said the awards reflect the talented people across trades in Hawke's Bay, and with the amount of building activity currently in progress, they are anticipating another good turn out for the 2021 event.
