A group of six prisoners remain on the roof of Hawke's Bay Regional Prison.
It's understood the youth unit inmates scaled part of the building in their ascent about 2.30pm. They were still there at 8.30pm this evening.
The prisoners are aged 17 to 19.
They could be in for a cold night - temperatures are currently 4C and could drop as low as 2C overnight.
Liz Hawthorn, Lower North Regional Commissioner, said staff responded "immediately to contain the incident" and were currently talking to the prisoners.
