Detective Sergeant Craig Vining said it was likely the offender lived close by or was picked up by a car given his lack of footwear.
"There were plenty of people in the area who may now recall seeing him and the fact he has come into money will be a sign for his family and associates."
"The victim did everything right and was not harmed during the robbery."
Police were also investigating a serious incident in Hastings where two people were attacked by horseback riders on Saturday.
A 19-year-old man and his 8-year-old cousin were allegedly set upon by three people riding two horses in Swansea Village in Flaxmere, behind the library, about 11.30am.
Mr Vining said the offenders were described as in their early teens, aged between 13 and 16, wearing red and black clothing and bandannas.
They initially used at least one of their horses to kick the 19-year-old victim before they climbed off, assaulted him further and took his property, Mr Vining said.
The victim suffered minor injuries and was now home with his family.
"CCTV footage of the incident has been obtained and is being reviewed. However, further information from the community is sought," the detective sergeant said.
"This group of three offenders would have been quite noticeable given their mode of travel and police would like to hear from anyone who may have information in relation to the incident."
Yesterday Mr Vining said police would like to hear from anyone with information that might help their inquiries into the two incidents.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Napier Central Police Station on (06) 831 0700, Hastings Police Station on 06) 873 0500 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
