With Guy Fawkes coming up this Sunday Napier City Council is urging fireworks fans to be considerate of endangered dotterels that live on the city’s foreshore.
Currently, it is nesting season for these birds making it vital to respect their nesting areas.
People should not light fires and set off fireworks along the foreshore in known dotterel nesting areas which are Beacons Reserve (the walkway between Westshore and Bay View) and the beach reserve south of the National Aquarium.
One person was seriously injured after a crash involving a truck and a car in Awatoto overnight Thursday.
Emergency services responded to the incident on State Highway 51 at 12.14am.
A Hato Hone St John spokeswoman said ambulance officers treated and transported one person in a serious condition to Hawke’s Bay Hospital.
A police spokeswoman said the incident blocked the southbound lane of the road until about 1.45am due to debris spread from “significant” damage to the car involved.
Rural Support Trust Gala raises $40,000 for cyclone-hit farmers
The Rural Support Trust Gala held on October 7 raised $40 000 which will go towards East Coast Rural Support Trust.
The event was held at the Cheval Room in Hastings with 275 people in attendance entertained with a live band and DJ.
Five big prizes were up for auction including a five-night apartment stay in Queensland with a $1000 travel voucher, various trips around New Zealand, and a signed Magpies jersey.
The evening also had 35 sponsors and 100 items were donated for the balloon wall from a wide variety of businesses. The money will enable Rural Support Trusts to continue to support the Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne regions in the recovery after the cyclone.
A World shearing record attempt which was to have featured former Napier Boys’ High School student Sam Henderson in West Australia has been called-off after the lambs did not meet the required minimum wool weight.
Henderson and fellow New Zealanders Jimmy Samuels, of Marton, and Australia-based Levin Neil, from Taumarunui, were targeting the 3-stand record for merino lambs in nine hours near Kojonup.
The lambs were required to carry an average of at least 1kg of wool each, but the weight was unable to be met in a wool-weigh shear in the woolshed on Thursday, on the eve of the bid, in front of judges, including one from South Africa.
One moderately injured after Clive crash
One person was left in a moderate condition after a crash that blocked the Clive Bridge overnight Wednesday.
Emergency services responded to a two-vehicle crash on the bridge on State Highway 51, at 11.13pm on Wednesday.
A police spokeswoman said one vehicle flipped on its side while the other stopped in the middle of the bridge. No one was trapped.
The spokeswoman said the serious crash unit was advised and the road was closed for at least 30 minutes before the scene was cleared about 1.15am.

Bookings open for HazMobile
Hastings and Napier residents will be able to dispose of hazardous waste for free on November 26 such as garden sprays, car oil and fuel, cleaners, paints and chemicals.
The HazMobile service will be available on that date, although the location is not being released publicly, as the service is restricted to the first 650 registrations.
To book go to the Napier City Council or Hastings District Council websites and search HazMobile.

Events fund is open
Hawke’s Bay Tourism is calling for applications from event operators to apply for a one-off events fund that has been established to assist the creation or further development of regional events in Hawke’s Bay.
The organisation said the Hawke’s Bay Regional Events Fund was designed to deliver the Ministry of Business Innovation & Employment (MBIE) Regional Events Fund to events in a way that drives visitation and economic benefit to Hawke’s Bay and stimulates recovery following Cyclone Gabrielle.
The fund is a contestable events fund with a total pool of $100,000, with no more than $25,000 allocated to any single event.
All applications will be assessed by the Hawke’s Bay Events Fund Panel against the outlined criteria and guidelines. Applications close Sunday, November 5 and any application information can be found at www.hawkesbaytourism.nz
Arrest made
A man has been arrested for making a threat understood to have been directed at Flaxmere’s Work and Income service centre on Tuesday.
A police spokeswoman said a 32-year-old man was arrested and summonsed to appear in court on a charge of “speaks threateningly” in relation to a threat made over the phone.
